  18. <p>     A bold black-and-white label will begin appearing by July
  19. on many musical recordings sold in the U.S. Its message:
  20. PARENTAL ADVISORY--EXPLICIT LYRICS. Last week the recording
  21. industry unveiled the uniform marking in an attempt to fend off
  22. bills in five state legislatures that would require labels on
  23. recordings that contain explicit lyrics dealing with sex,
  24. violence, suicide, drug use, bigotry and satanism. Under the
  25. industry's program, the decision to put the standardized label
  26. on a new release would be made by the record company and the
  27. artists rather than by government officials.

  29. <p>     The Parents' Music Resource Center, which has crusaded
  30. against explicit lyrics, applauded the move. Local politicians
  31. were less pleased. "This plan doesn't even touch most of the
  32. music we're talking about," says Missouri legislator Jean
  33. Dixon. She points out that the trade group promoting the
  34. voluntary label, the Recording Industry Association of America,
  35. does not represent many of the companies that produce the most
  36. offensive albums.
